Classes 68(i) and 85 A method of constructing a shaft between two mine-levels, 1, 2, one above the other, or between one mine-level and the ground level comprises drilling a trial bore-hole 3 between the two levels, drawing a motor-driven boring-machine 7 upwards by means of a rope 6 in the borehole to widen it and then further widening the shaft 4 to the required diameter, the broken material falling down the shaft and being removed at the lower level. In the form shown, Fig. 2, the boring machine is provided with a plurality of boririg crowns or discs, provided with cutters 10, which project upwardly above the machine, the crowns revolving about their own driving shafts and the driving shafts revolving about the longitudinal axis of the machine. The machine is also provided with a pair of side milling cutters 11 to form grooves in the shaft into which fit shoes 12 to prevent rotation of the machine body. The rope 6 is attached to the machine by a swivelling thimble 8 which serves as a guide within the bore hole 3. A pneumatic or electric motor 14 drives the machine via a clutch 15 and transmission' gearing 16 having a number of gear ratios. The motor may be remotely controlled, pneumatically or electrically, from the 'lower level or from the machine itself. The boring crowns may be replaced by roller bits or discs fitted with diamonds, hardened metal spikes or scarring picks, in which (a) each roller or disc rotates about its own axis, (b) each of these axes revolve about the roller or disc driving shaft which runs parallel to the longitudinal axis of the boring machine, and (c) the roller or disc driving shafts revolve about the axis of the machine.
