698,887. Pneumatic tyres. BROCKHOUSE & CO., Ltd., J. Aug. 20, 1951 [Aug. 21, 1950], No. 20680/50. Class 144 (i). An apparatus for freeing a tyre 23 from a wheel rim 12 comprises a carrier member in the form of a bar 1 or a spider anchored either at the rim or wheel centre by means 8, 9, a pusher element 29 being pivoted to one end of the carrier member to extend transversely thereto to contact the tyre bead and being movable transversely of the carrier member to drive between the tyre bead and the bead-retaining flange of the wheel rim. As shown a carrier bar 1 is formed with a longitudinal slot 6 to receive hook-end screw-threaded rods 8, 9 adjustable along the bar and provided with nuts 16, 16<SP>1</SP> to provide for anchorage of the bar across the wheel rim 12 either at the rim or wheel centre as shown in full and dotted lines respectively in Fig. 2. One end of the bar 1 has a cranked extension 24 to which is pivoted a transversely extending U-section pusher element 29 having a toe portion 35 for insertion between the tyre bead 34 and the bead-retaining flange of the rim 12. The pusher 29 encloses a rotatable captive screw-threaded bar 28 which co-operates with a nut 26 pivoted to the bar extension 24 for advance or retraction of the pusher 29. In operation the bar 1 is applied to a wheel rim with the pusher carrying end engaged under the peripheral rim flange 11 to prevent axial movement of th3 bar, and the pusher 29 advanced. As the tyre bead is eased from the rim flange 11 the pusher pivots to slide the pusher toe 35 between the bead and rim flange. Where necessary a U-shaped wedge 39 chained to the pusher is then inserted between the bead and the bead-retaining flange of the rim to allow withdrawal and repositioning of the pusher around the rim to complete separation of the bead and rim. In alternative arrangements the carrier bar 1 may comprise two or more telescopic sections with a pusher element at the end of each section. The pusher element may be pneumatically or hydraulically operated.
