A dental or medical equipment stand comprises a housing formed with an opening, and an instrument holder pivotally connected with the housing by link means so that it may be swung outside the opening or retracted within the housing. An electric motor 63 mounted on a frame portion 45 has a shaft on which diametrically opposed arms'65, 66 and a crank arm 67 are rotatable. The crank arm 67 is connected by a rod 69 with side walls 37 of a control panel 38, the side walls 37 being pivoted to the frame 45 and the holder 23. A link 50, carrying a bracket 59 having a pin 58 directly connects the holder 23 with the frame 45. An arm 54 on which a cover 53 for an opening 32 is mounted is pivoted on the frame 45. Counterbalancing springs 47, 48 attached to crank extension 46 of the side walls 37, are connected at their other ends to a stationary frame portion 49 and the cover arm 54 respectively. In order to expose the instrument holder 23, the electric motor 63 is started by a manual switch (not shown) causing rotation of the diametrically opposed arms 65, 66 which allows the closure of an automatic switch (not shown) maintaining the energisation of the motor 63. The diametrically opposed arms 65, 66 continue to rotate through half a revolution when they open the automatic switch again. The crank-arm 67 also rotates through half a revolution towards the opening 32 causing the advance of the control panel 38 to close the opening 32 and the projection of the instrument holder 23 through the opening 32. As the instrument holder 23 advances, the pin 58, which in the fully retracted position of the apparatus engages a cam slot 57 on the. cover arm 54 to hold the cover 53 over the opening 32, moves out of the cam slot 57 and allows the cover 53 to slide downwardly to uncover the opening 32. In the fully advanced position, a hook 61 on the instrument holder 23 engages with a similar hook 62 on the cover 53. In order to retract the instrument holder 23, the electric motor 63 is again started by the manual switch, the automatic switch being again closed for half a revolution of the diametrically opposed arms 65, 66 and crank arm 67. The crank arm 67 rotates away from the opening 32 to cause the withdrawal of the control panel 38 and instrument holder 23. When the link 50 has fallen sufficiently, pin 58 re-engages the cam slot 57 to cause the cover 53 to rise and cover the opening 32. The stand is provided with a cuspidor, a dental tray and an engine arm (all not shown).
