Abstract
696,255. Measuring heat radiation. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 30, 1952 [July 27, 1951], No. 17880/51. Class 40 (iii). The temperature of a hot surface is measured by means of a heat sensitive cell on to which radiant heat from the surface is directed by means of a heat ray guide comprising a rod of material transparent to heat rays. As shown, radiant heat from molten metal 4 in a furnace 5 is directed by a rod 3 of quartz on to a heatsensitive cell 1. The rod which may also be of " Perspex " (Registered Trade Mark), a heatresistant glass, or a tube of transparent liquid such as water, conducts radiation to a heatsensitive electric cell mounted inside a metal box 2 which shields it from direct heat rays. The rod may be mounted at an angle to the surface when, it is stated, the output of the cell is a measure of the average temperature over an area. The rod is not necessarily straight and to provide sensitivity adjustment an iris shutter may be provided at its lower end.
