696,198. Machine-tool details. BOURDON TOOLS, Ltd. April 21, 1952, No. 9944/52. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Group XXIII] Apparatus for supplying a liquid for lubricating and cooling a tool 6, which describes a solid of revolution of hollow cylindrical, cup, conical, or the like form comprises means for supplying coolant under pressure to the inner surface of the tool and for imparting a rotary motion to the coolant, and means for simultaneously feeding the coolant to a channel 11 around the exterior of the tool and discharging it in an annular curtain extending in the general direction of the axis of rotation of the tool, the curtain of coolant contacting the spray of coolant thrown outwardly from the tool and deflecting it on to the work. The grinding or cutting-tool 6 is rotated by a shaft 4 in a slide 1 having a valve chest 17 to which coolant is fed through a flexible hose 26. At least one passage 16 in the chest 17 conveys the coolant to an annular channel 9 in the wheel-head 5 which has openings 10 allowing the coolant to flow down the inner surface of the wheel. The coolant is fed to the channel 11 in the end of the slide through at least one passage 18 in the chest 17. The lower wall of the channel is formed by a ring 12 having an eccentric outer surface providing an outlet 13 for the coolant which is narrowest immediately beneath the passage 18 and gradually increases in width to facilitate the flow of coolant around the channel 9 and the forming of the annular curtain of coolant through the outlet 13. The supply of coolant may be regulated by valves 22, 23, and a guard 8 is attached to the slide.
