Abstract
689,051. Extruding. BOOTH & CO., Ltd., J. May 7, 1951 [May 6, 1950], No. 11276/50. Class 83 (iv). In a method of extruding a billet of heat - treatable aluminium alloy, a layer of metal is interposed between the billet and the walls of the extrusion chamber along the entire length of the billet. A heated billet 14 of a material such as that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Duralumin " has a strip 15 of pure aluminium wound over its entire length to act as a lubricant during extrusion through a hexagonal section orifice 12 of a die 13. A disc 16 of pure aluminium may be placed between the end of the billet and the die orifice. Other metals may be used in place of pure aluminium such as aluminium zinc alloy containing 1 per cent of zinc, pure magnesium or magnesium manganese alloy containing up to 1.5 per cent of manganese. The billet may be heated to 400-500‹ C. and the metal 15, of a thickness of from 0.03 to 0.04 inch, then applied. The extruded product is finally heat-treated, e.g. at a temperature of 500‹ C. for 30 minutes and then quenched in water at room temperature.
