Abstract
688,837. Treating liquids with gases. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 20, 1951 [Feb. 22, 1950], No. 4611/50. Class 55 (ii) [Also in Groups I and VI] A packing for fluid contact apparatus, e.g. in solvent extraction and fractional distillation, comprises a three-dimensional labyrinth in which substantially all the surface lines are smooth unbroken curves. Preferably its shape is basically that of superposed layers of rods, the rods of one layer being transverse to those of the next and staggered with respect to those of the next but one layers, and the surface being modified so that the sum of the curvatures in two directions normal to each other is zero. An element, Fig. 4, is formed of three parts a, b, c, obtained by subdividing the structure of Fig. 2 along planes IV-IV and supported within a rim 5 by a lipped web 6.
