Abstract
687,878. Cigarettes and cigarette-making machines. STANGEL, A., and GAMBLE, H. Oct. 8, 1951 [Oct. 9, 1950], No. 24569/50. Class 130. Mouthpiece cigarettes of the kind in which a wool or like filter wad is positioned between a paper, cellulose or like plug and the tobacco filling are made by feeding a plug and cigarette length to an assembly position in which they are spaced apart sufficiently to allow a wad to be placed between them, whereafter the plug, wad and length are united by a cork, paper or other tip. As applied to making double-length cigarettes, single cigarette lengths 6, Fig. 1, and double-length plugs 7, shown as of oval cross-section, are fed from hoppers 1, 2, 3, Fig. 2, into flutes 4 of a rotary drum 5 so that in each flute a plug 7 lies between two lengths 6 with the interposition of spaces Z, Fig. 4, into which wads 8 cut by scissors 10 from ropes 9 are transferred on drum rotation by needles 11 on rotary wheels 13, the wads being rotated during transference by a reciprocatory striker (not shown) so as to lie parallel with the flutes and being stripped from the needles by a shield 26. Presser plates (not shown) mounted at each side of the drum then compact each flute filling axially and further drum rotation brings it under a travelling band 20 which deposits a gummed tip 18 cut from a web 19 on the filling so as to cover the plug and wads and overlap slightly onto the cigarette lengths. The fillings are finally transferred to another fluted drum 21 and, after the free ends of the tips have been stroked down by brushes 22, 23, delivered to a conveyer 25 via a transfer drum 27 co-acting with a knife 24 to sever them into individual cigarettes. In a modification, the wads 8 are rotated into parallelism with the flutes 4 by rotation of the needles 11 by engagement of gears thereon with stationary toothed segments. The apparatus may be modified to assemble single-length or multiplelength cigarettes.
