Class 39(iii) [Also in Group VI] An electric grill comprises two hot-plates 1, 8 each with a heating element 16, one plate being rigidly mounted on a base 3 and the other being hinged thereto to come opposite to it, each plate having on the surface adapted to come into contact with the food a series of rectilinear grooves 11 and ridges 10 of saw tooth section extending from front to rear and parallel with the side edges of the plates, the ridges making linear contact with the food, and the ridges on one. plate being opposite ridges on the other plate. The plate 1 is fixed in a casing 2 to a frame 3 and has. hinged thereto at 4 a U-shaped frame 5 carrying pivot's 6 supporting the heating plate 8 in a casing 7. Pins 5b on the plate 8 engage slots 5a in the frame 5 so as to limit angular movement of the plate 8 on the pivots 6. The teeth 12 make an angle of 45 degrees to 70 degrees with the line passing through the base of the teeth and reflect the heat rays at acute angles to the plate. The frame 5 may carry a stop so that the plate 8 cannot be raised more than is shown in Fig. 2, or the plate 8 may be turned back to a horizontal position and rest on a bent handle 8a on the casing 7. The heating plates are polished and are of cast iron with 0.1-0.4 per cent chromium. The plate 8 may be maintained in adjusted position by a counterweight or by an adjustable spring. The upper heating plate has a smaller surface than the lower plate. The casing 3 has a current supply socket 38 and a switch 40 to energize one or both plates, the supply wires to the casing 7 passing through a flexible tube 32. The resistance 16 is separated from the plate 3 by a mica sheet 18 and is insulated from a clamping plate 19 secured by screws 24 to the plate 8 by a mica plate 20, an asbestos plate 21, aluminium foil 22 and an asbestos plate 23. The casing 7 is attached to the plate by screws 28 and is separated by aluminium foils 25, 26 and a layer 27 of glass wool or asbestos from the clamping plate 19. A hinged rod 34 holds a container 36 collecting cooking juices; or when swung into position 37, the rod 34 holds the plate 1 horizontal.
