Abstract

687,167. Grinding wheels. TITAN ABRASIVES CO. July 21, 1950 [Sept. 12, 1949], No. 18266/50. Class 60. A grinding wheel is built up of a number of relatively thin disc-like grinding elements assembled side by side and having interlocking tongues and grooves which aid in restraining a broken section of an element from being thrown outwardly by centrifugal force. In one embodiment, Figs. 2 and 3, the wheel comprises annular elements 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15. Each inner element such as 12 is provided on one side with equally spaced tongues 12a each of which engages a corresponding groove 13b in the adjacent element 13; the side edges 12c of the tongue 12a are inclined toward each other from the inner to the outer periphery of the element along chordal lines. The element 12 is also provided on the side opposite the tongue 12a with a groove 12b for receiving the tongue of the adjacent element 11. The succeeding tongues and grooves of the different elements are out of line with each other so that the wheel is not unduly weakened in any single section. The outer side surface of each outer element 10 and 15 is made planar; the end element 10 has tongues on the inner side thereof, while the other end element 15 has grooves on the inner side thereof. In another embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6, the wheel comprises elements 110-115. Each of the elements 110-114 has at least one pair of tongues 110a engaging similar grooves 111b. Each tongue 110a has substantially parallel side edges and each tongue and groove is inclined so as to be along chordal lines; the tongues and grooves of each pair are inclined towards each other from the inner to the outer periphery of the elements. The adjacent disc-like elements may be cemented together, and the wheel is mounted between steel end plates 16, 17 connected by bolts 18. The disc elements may each have different grinding characteristics.
