A machine comprising a swinging tool for grooving a mortise, or forming a tenon between two mortises, and a pair of heading chisels driven with a rectilinear reciprocating motion for cutting and planing the walls of the mortise or the smaller sides of the tenon, the swinging tool being fixed to a tool-carrying rocker pivoted on an adjustable eccentric, is characterised in that the tool-carrying rocker is coupled through a connecting rod to a swinging lever fulcrumed about a fixed pivot and actuated with an oscillatory movement of which each cycle corresponds to one revolution of the rocker eccentric. The swinging tool 10 is carried by rocker 12 pivoted on an adjustable eccentric 13. An oppositely mounted eccentric 25 of fixed eccentricity carries a connecting rod 27 oscillating a lever 30 about fulcrum 31. The lever 30 is pivoted to link 33 at 32 and the latter link is pivoted to the rocker at 35. Reciprocating chisels 53, 54 are driven from pivots 40, 41 through linkwork as shown. The chisels may be adjusted to vary the gap between them. The work is fed in the direction T. The amplitude of swinging tool 10 is variable by varying the throw of eccentric 13. A tenoning tool consisting of a pair of spaced chisels may be substituted for the mortising tool 10.
