Abstract
684,811. Blasting fuzes. WEREIDE, T., and PLATOU, E. Feb. 2, 1951 [Oct. 17, 1950], No. 2685/51. Class 9(i) An electric detonator is screened against ignition by stray currents by enclosing the lead wires in a structure forming with the detonator casing an electrically conducting shield. Fig. 3 shows a blasting cap comprising an aluminium casing 1 containing a charge 2, e.g. lead azide and tetryl, a delay element 3 and an igniter 4. A perforated member separates the charge 2 from the delay element and the ignition material is carried bv a wire filament 5, e.g. platinum, connecting electric conductors 7 passing through a closure 6. The conductors 7 consist of copper wires 9 covered by an insulating layer 10 over which a metal covering 8 is placed. This metal covering may be aluminium or tin foil or a metal sheath pressed around the wire. The covering 8 is connected to the metal case of the igniter, both electrically and mechanically, by shrinking, pressing, soldering, welding, or by a wrapping of metal foil. The free ends of the leads 7 are connected to a current source or in series with other blasting caps.
