Abstract

673,197. Jet propulsion plant. LINDEROTH, E. T. Jan. 27, 1950 [Jan. 29, 1949], No. 2248/50. Class 110(iii) [Also in Groups XII, XIII and XXIX] A jet-propulsion unit comprises five Venturi tubes 1d discharging into a common series of ejector tubes 30a leading to a propulsion nozzle, and pipes 33 interconnecting adjacent tubes 1d. The tubes 1d are formed at or near their throats with an annular sharp edge facing downstream so that they serve as aerodynamic non-return valves (see Group XXIX), permitting free flow in the normal direction but offering considerable resistance to flow in the opposite direction. Fuel is injected in to the tubes 1d at 32, whilst air is obtained from an inlet 37. The unit is started by charging all the tubes 1d with a fuel-air mixture and then igniting the charge in one tube. The combustion passes to an adjacent tube by way of one of the tubes 33, and thus in turn the charge in each tube 1d is ignited. When the first tube is again reached it will have drawn in a fresh charge, and so the cycle of operations is sustained. Each tube 33 has a flared inlet 34 at one end and a nozzle. 35 at the other end to facilitate flow in one direction only. Cooling air is drawn through jackets 8b surrounding the tubes 1d by the action of the ejectors 30a. Any reverse flow that may take place through the tubes 1d is passed to the propulsion nozzle by passages 30b.
