Abstract
673,158. Suction cleaner handles. HOOVER Ltd. July 5, 1950 [July 7, 1949], No. 16808/50 Class 61 (i). [Also in Group XXVIII] Control mechanism for a pivoted suction cleaner handle 13, Fig. 2, which may be locked.- in the upright storage position and released by forward movement of the handle comprises a. latch 21 carried thereby and engaging a detent 29 on the cleaner body, and means e.g., curved surfaces 30, 31 for shifting the latch laterally in relation to the detent 29 when the handle is moved forward beyond the storage position and is then moved back, resulting in the latch 21 clearing the detent 29. The handle 13 fits into a bifurcated socket 16 pivoted about a pin 17 between body brackets 11, and upwardly biassed by a spring 18. The latch 21 is pivoted about a socket pin 20 and projects through a slot 22 so that during normal working conditions its hooked end 23 rides along a track 24 formed in the upper surface of a body bracket 25. When the handle approaches the storage position the hook 23 enters a locking track 27 and engages the detent 29, and on forward releasing movement of the handle the hook 23 is guided by the surface 30 into a by-pass track 28, Fig. 3, located below the surface 30. On rearward movement of the handle the hook 23 traverses the track 28 until it is guided by the surface 31 back to the track 24 which is disposed below it. A wall 32 assists to prevent premature lateral displacement of the hook from the track 28. The upper and lower limits of normal handle displacement are determined by engagement of the end 36 of a spring 35 with the forward and rear ends of a socket slot 37. The end 36 is overridden by applying extra force to effect the forward releasing movement, and similarly the rear end of the slot 37 is overridden when lowering the handle below its normal range. A positive stop 40 limits the forward releasing movement. In a modification the lateral displacement of the latch 21 is effected by shaping the socket slot 22.
