677,051. Transformers and inductances. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 18, 1950 [Dec. 21, 1949], No, 30756/50. Class 38 (ii). A transformer or inductance coil 8 of the core type having a gap 9 in one limb 4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP> and non-magnetic material 10 in the gap is characterized in that the resultants of the reactive forces exerted by the non-magnetic material 10 upon the two portions of the limb 41, 411 bounding the gap 9 act on points in the plane through the centre lines of the limbs 3, 4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP>, the points being shifted by a distance " d " from the centre line of the limb 4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP> in a direction remote from the window enclosed by the core. By such a construction the amplitude of the core vibrations-due to the alternating current in the coil 8-may be attenuated, the distance " d " to give minimum amplitude being determined experimentally. The non-magnetic material may be of various shapes and need not be homogeneous in the direction of the lines of force in the gap. If two separate pieces of non- magnetic material are placed in the gap that nearest the window is preferably of a material mechanically less rigid than the other.
