Abstract

An electrolytic device comprises an electrode consisting of a base having an electrically-conductive, spray-deposited, metal layer thereon which is porous and permeable throughout, the base having been artificially cooled during the spraying process to prevent the formation of a continuous and impervious layer. Cooling may be effected by a current of gas or water directed on to the side of the base not being coated or by a current of gas discharged in a direction parallel to the spray; the spray may also be cooled. The base may be a metallic sheet, e.g. an aluminium sheet, wire, rod or casting, an open-mesh gauze or an insulating material such as porcelain or glass; the coating metal may be aluminium, in which case the base may be maintained at 500-800 DEG F. Specifications 413,900, 433,481, 503,370, 515,880, [all in Group XXXVI], and 534,972 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, refers also to the cooling of the spray alone. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
