Abstract

A stable suspension of particles of solid material in a liquid medium is obtained by preparing a suspension of 15-25 per cent by weight of the solid particles, of size not greater than 0.5m , in the liquid and thereupon adding larger particles of the solid, of size greater than 0.5m but not greater than 200 mesh, until the total amount of the solid in the suspension is 30-60 per cent. The liquid medium chosen is one capable of producing Brownian movement with the solid particles and after the suspension of the smaller particles has been prepared, the Brownian movement is allowed to become sufficiently intense to sustain the larger particles before these are intimately dispersed throughout the mixture. The process is applicable to the preparation of suspensions of coal in fuel oil, of pigment in drying oil, of graphite in oil, or of ore in oil. After the stable dispersion has been prepared, it may be subjected to grinding to reduce all the large size particles to less than 64m in diameter.
