Abstract

A flake metal leafing powder is prepared by subjecting the metal in comminuted form while it is being hammer-reduced to particle size, to the action of a straight chain aliphatic amine having not less than 14 atoms and a molecular weight from 185 to 300, the proportion of amine to the metal being not less than 1.5 per cent, and preferably from 2 to 20 per cent. Specified amines are octadecylamine, tetradecylamine and hexadecylamine and specified metals are aluminium, copper and their alloys. A solvent such as mineral spirits or a thinner such as Varnolene may also be present. The reduction may take place in a ball mill.
