Abstract
674,000. Prestressed concrete; beams; roofs. MOUCHEL & PARTNERS, Ltd., L. G. Aug. 4, 1950 [Oct. 14, 1949], No. '26482/49. Class.20(iv). A concrete shell of substantially semicircular cross section is provided. with a prestressing reinforcement of continuous curvature, the reinforcement imparting to the edges a set of reactions equal to those which would be produced by a rigid support placed under the edges. In Fig. 3 the invention is shown applied to a roof structure which consists of a number of bays, each covered by a shell 10 of thin concrete. Below the junction of each adjoining pair of shells is placed a beam 12, supported at its ends. The beam, which is shown in Fig. 7, is provided with a curved duct extending from one end to the other, a steel reinforcing element 17 being threaded through the duct. The reinforcing element is tensioned and anchored against the beam ends and, due to its curvature, exerts a lifting force which increases towards the mid-point of the lengths of the beam. The hogging of the beam due to this force is prevented by prestressed reinforcement 19, 21 and 22, whilst the force serves to counteract the downward thrust due to the weight of the shells, so that shells of considerable length can be supported without sagging by beams which are supported only at their ends. The separate beams may be dispensed with by placing the curved reinforcement in the material of each shell. In a modification, Figs. 8 to 10 (not shown), polygonal shells are supported without deflection in a similar manner, the curved reinforcement being arranged in each side member and tensioned so as to produce the same reactions at the junctions of the members as would be produced by continuous rigid supporting means.
