Abstract
661,401. Packaging food. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. Jan. 19, 1949 [Jan. 28, 1948], No. 1529/49. Class 94(i) [Also in Groups VI, VIII and XXVIII] In the formation of a food package by simultaneously forming a casing and stuffing it with material of a plastic nature, e.g. ice-cream, butter, cheese &c. the casing is formed from hydrophilic cellulose sheet material seamed by applying to the edges to be joined an acidic aqueous solution of a partially-polymerized, watersoluble, heat-hardening, resin-forming condensation product and subjecting them to heat and pressure (see Group VIII). As shown, the invention is applied to the formation of sausages. Sheet material 14 is drawn from a roll over a roller 28 and is guided by tube-forming means 15 to form a continuous tube 16 around the nozzle of a sausage meat container 9, the edges of tube 16 overlapping to form the seam. Resin solution is applied from a container 27 by a wick 17 and the edges are pressed by a heated shoe or roller 19. After passing over the end of the nozzle 10 the seamed tubing is tied and is then filled with sausage meat by opening a valve 8, and the stuffed casing twisted at intervals to provide sausage links. The seams may be formed below, instead of above, nozzle 10, the soluticn being applied by a roller or disc which dips into a reservoir. Instead of using a flat seam, the edges of the sheet may be abutted to form an upstanding seam, which may be gripped for subsequent stripping of the casing. The casing material may be regenerated cellulose, denitrated cellulose nitrate, or alkali-soluble, water-insoluble cellulose material. The resin may be a urea-melamine-, or ketoneformaldehyde resin, or a phenolic resin. Specification 595,797 is referred to.
