Abstract

667,974. Metal containers. THOMPSON (WOLVERHAMPTON), Ltd., J., and GRIFFITHS, S. H. July 3, 1950 [July 7, 1949], No. 17928/49. Class 66 [Also in Group XXII] In a cylindrical steel drum wherein an end plate has a cylindrical outwardly directed flange welded within the end of the drum shell, the flange extends beyond the end of the shell or vice-versa and an annular weld is made in the angle between the wall of the projecting part and the end of the other part, being so positioned that an X-ray photograph of the weld is obtainable with rays directed radially of the shell. In an embodiment the end of the shell 1, Fig. 1, is secured to the flange 2 by a fusion weld 3 in a V-shaped recess between a bevelled end of the shell 1 and a lip 2<SP>x</SP> on the flange 2. A film &c. 6 is located to intercept rays 4 from a source 5. The lip 2<SP>x</SP> may be replaced by a lip of rectangular section or by a bevelled lip. In a further embodiment the weld 3, Fig. 8, is formed in a V-shaped recess between the bevelled end of the shell 1 and a metal band 8, the latter being welded at 9 to the flange 2. In another embodiment, plug welds 7, Fig. 7, may be used in addition to the weld 3. Modifications include the weld provided between the shell and a cranked flange and the welds provided radially inwardly of the shell.
