Abstract

666,803. Spinning-tops. MASON, E. E. Aug. 31, 1950 [ Aug. 22, 1949], No. 21738/49. Class 132 (iii). A spinning-top on which gradual colour changes are automatically produced as the top spins comprises a dished base 10 with hollow spindle 17 in which is an archemedean type driving means. An apertured upper disc 37 has a square shaped central opening which engages the boss 35 on an inner hub ring 16, and a coloured lower disc 31 has a central aperture with notches which engage with lugs 34 on an outer hub ring 15. Two centrifugal weights 22 of approximately semicircular shape are pivoted at their leading ends and are normally urged to their innermost positions by elastic bands or springs 25. One of the weights 22 is linked to outer hub ring 15 and the other to inner hub ring 16. Upon spinning the top, the weights 22 pivot outwardly and discs 31 and 37 on hub rings 15 and 16 respectively rotate relatively in opposite directions to positions depending upon the speed of rotation of the top. Different panels of banks of colours are thus observed through the apertures in disc 37 as the speed of the top decreases. A range of different coloured discs and apertured discs may be provided.
