Abstract
Artificial filaments, fibres, or threads, are obtained by extruding a molten polymeric organic compound through metal spinnerets which have been coated with a thin film of a thermo-resistant organic compound of silicon. The coating prevents the formation of deposits of the filament-forming compound on the surface of the spinnerets. The silicon compound may be a polyorganosiloxane or a polysilazine. It may be a poly-methylsiloxane, a cyclic siloxane such as a poly-octamethyl-cyclotetrasiloxane, or a reaction product of an organo-siliconhalide with water-free ammonia. In an example, a molten polyamide obtained from hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid is extruded through a chrome-nickel-steel spinneret which has previously been exposed to the vapour of dimethyl-dichloro-silane. In another example, a molten polycaproicamide is extruded through a chrome-nickel-steel spinneret which has previously been coated by immersion in a benzene solution of a reaction product of dimethyl-dichloro-silane and water-free ammonia. The treated spinnerets may be used in the melt-spinning of polyamides, polyesters, polyesteramides, and polyurethanes including condensation products of glycols with di-isocyanates.
