Abstract

665,038. Rope grips. KERR & CO. (MANCHESTER), Ltd., J. Aug. 10, 1950. [Aug. 13, 1949] No. 21092/49. Classes 78 (ii) and 78 (v). [Also in Group XXXIV] In automatic escape apparatus the brake mechanism comprises a centrifugal brake having peripherally spaced brake elements co-operating with a non-rotating lining in a brake drum or housing, the brake being driven by the cable through an epicyclic gearing. A base plate 1 has a snap hook and a plate 4 rivetted to the plate 1 and having a central post 5 on which a cable pulley 6 rotates. The pulley has a flange 7 secured to a pair of planet wheels 9 meshing with a stationary annulus 10 secured by legs 12 to lugs 13a on a brake housing 13. The planet wheels mesh with a sun wheel 11 mounted to rotate on a bush 14 on the shaft 5 and integral with a hub. The hub has spokes 16 having a rim 17 with four cavities for weights 20. As the pulley 6 is rotated at speed the weights 20 are thrown outwardly to engage a brake lining 21 secured to the brake housing 13 so controlling the speed of descent. The mechanism is enclosed by a cover 22 attached to the plate 4.
