Abstract

664,927. Cleaning heat exchangers. THOMPSON WATER TUBE BOILERS, Ltd., J., and NAPIER A. L. March 13, 1950 [March 11, 1949], No. 6780/49 Class 99 (ii) The lower end of a gas passage in which heatexchange apparatus (not shown) e.g. an economiser, superheater, air heater or boiler tubes, is located, is provided with a damper or dampers 7 mounted below the heat exchanger, the damper or dampers being arranged when closed, to present an inclined upper surface and means being provided to drain away liquid falling on the damper or dampers for example when washing the elements of the heat exchanger. In the form shown a pair of dampers are arranged in inverted V formation, the liquid draining away at each side into open troughs 14 recessed into the walls of the gas passage, from which it passes through pipes 19 to waste, the pipes 19 being provided with non- return valves,to prevent air entering the gas pass when the heat exchanger is in circuit i.e. when the dampers 7 are open and the damper 6 of the byepass passage is closed. In an alternative arrangement the pair of dampers are arranged in upright V-formation and drain into a trough disposed centrally within the gas passage Fig. 4 (not shown). In a further alternative only a single damper is provided which drains into a trough recessed into one of the walls of the gas passage. A second damper or set of dampers may be provided above the heat exchanger to completely isolate it during the washing operation.
