Abstract
An aluminium alloy contains 1.3-2.3 per cent Mg; more than 0.75 but less than 2 per cent Zn; 1.5-4.5 per cent Cu; 0.1-0.8 per cent Ni replaceable up to 0.3 per cent by Co; 0.01-0.25 per cent in all Be or Ag or both; 0-0.25 per cent Ti; 0-0.35 per cent Mn;O-0.25 per cent Cr; O-0.5 per cent Fe; 0-0.5 per cent Si; up to 0.2 per cent individually or 0.3 per cent in total Sb, Ce, V, Zr, Mo, Nb, Ta, W; up to 0.10 per cent of each Bi, As, Sn, Pb, B, Cd; up to 0.025 per cent of each Li, Na, K, Ba, Sr, Ca, S, P; the total content of Ni + Co + Mn + Cr + Fe + Cu not exceeding 5.2 per cent. The cast alloy may be solution treated at 470-570 DEG C for 2-30 hours; quenched in salt water; cold or hot water or oil up to 200 DEG C or cooled by air blast or in still air; and air aged for 3 days or treated for 6-10 hours at 180 DEG C or 3 hours at 230 C. Alternatively, the alloy may be used as cast or treated at 250-350 DEG C and may be hot worked by forging, rolling or extruding.
