Abstract

659,024. Drilling. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., Sir W. G., and PLESTER, J. Aug. 6, 1949, No. 20518. [Class 83 (iii)] A countersinking tool comprises a body 12 carrying a driving motor 11, means for blowing away swarf and cooling the cutter 15, and a spacer 32 for limiting the penetration of the cutter, the spacer encircling the cutter shank and being adjustably carried by the body The pneumatic motor 11 extends into the body sufficiently to contain the exhaust air from ports 22 with or without the aid of a seal such as the washer 23 and the air is led through passages 29 into the main part of the body and thence through a pipe 30 which directs it through holes 31 in the spacer. The motor drives a chuck 13 which is opened and closed by a bevel gear ring 18 operated by a tool inserted through an opening 19 in the body; this opening is normally closed by a ring 24 rotatable round the body. The spacer is screwed into the end of the body and locked by a nut 37; for setting the spacer and temporarily positioning it before locking, a spring-pressed plunger 40 engages an external ring of serrations 39 on the spacer. An enlarged bore on the end of the spacer permits countersinks with varying sizes of head to be fitted.
