Abstract
658,915. Visible signalling apparatus. STEMP, V. P., and BUCKINGHAM, J. June 30, 1949, No. 17307. [Class 118 (ii)] [Also in Group XL (c)] A reflector of radio waves which may also serve as a weather or navigational ball such as is hoisted to the mast of a ship for navigational purposes, comprises a flat metal plate 1 to which are hinged on one or both surfaces thereof along two perpendicular axes additional metal plates which normally lie flat close to the plate 1, as shown in Fig. 1, but which may be erected to occupy positions normal thereto and locked in these positions to provide a structure as shown in Fig. 6 having a substantially circular silhouette from all directions. When erecting the structure, the plates 2, 3, 4, and 5 are lifted in succession, the slots 8 in the flanges attached to plates 3, 4, and 5 engaging with pins projecting from the rear surfaces of plates 2, 3, and 4, respectively. The assembly is then locked in this position by rotating locking bar 10 through 180 degrees to the position shown in Fig. 6 and securing it in this position by a pen 12. The bar 10 also comprises a lifting eye for supporting the structure. The solid metal plates shown may be replaced by mesh sheets.
