Abstract

[Class 60] [Also in Group XXVI] Either the tool or the workpiece of a grinding, lapping or polishing machine is vibrated by coupling it to a resilientlymounted cylinder of a compressed air motor, the piston of which is free to vibrate independently of the cylinder. In the preferred embodiment, grinding tools 22 are vibrated and the machine is arranged for grinding toric lenses mounted on a rotatable carrier 5. Each of the tools 22 is held by a bar magnet 21 supported on the lower end of a flexible arm 19 secured to a cross member 2 which is supported from the frame 3 of the machine by two sets of adjustable springs 7, 8. The member 2 is connected with the cylinder 1 of the compressed air motor (see Group XXVI) which contains a free piston. The stroke of the cylinder and hence of the tools 22 depends upon the ratio of the inertia of the cylinder to that of the piston. Each tool is pressed into contact with the work by a lever 23 pivoted at 24 and loaded by a spring 26 which is constrained between a bracket 27 and an adjustable bush 25 in screw threaded engagement with the lever. Each lever is also provided with a sleeve 29 in screw threaded engagement with a spindle 28 so that the lever may be displaced about its pivot to withdraw the tool from the work. In order to permit vibration of the tool with respect to its lever, pressure is applied through a flexible connection comprising two studs 30, 33 and a spring 35, this assembly being enclosed in a rubber sleeve 36 and retained in assembled relationship by a chain 37 when the tool is in the withdrawn position. In a modification, the carrier rotates on a horizontal axis and the tool is mounted on the motor cylinder which is carried on two flexible arms to permit vibration. These two arms form one limb of a bell-crank lever which is spring-loaded and adapted to be displaced about its pivot by a hand lever in order to allow the tool to be withdrawn from the work.
