[Class 122(iii)] [Also in Groups I and XIII] Plate apparatus for heat exchange or filtering purposes wherein a plurality of parallel plates 42 are spaced apart by gaskets 99 each having a foot portion which is seated in a groove 96 in one plate and a crown portion adapted to engage an adjacent plate, is characterized in that each gasket is formed between said foot and crown portions with an intermediate portion which is of greater width than the foot and crown portions and which is adapted to engage the face of the first mentioned plate, adjacent to and on both sides of the groove, so that when the plurality of plates are held in compression, the thrust, instead of being taken by the side walls of the groove, is transmitted through the crown portion of the gasket to the intermediate portion and thus to that portion of the plate adjacent the groove. In the form shown, Fig. 4, the crown portion of the gasket is convex and the foot portion is rectangular, corresponding to the groove in the plate 42 into which it is fitted. At those points in the plates 42 where the groove 96 has an interruption in one or both of its side walls, e.g. at the junction with a branch groove, the foot portion of the gasket is thickened (e.g. as shown in Figs. 10 and 11) to provide the necessary support against the thrust of compression. The plates 42 are the same as those decribed in Specification 655,075, [Group XIII].
