[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts on Jan. 29, 1949.] [Class 5(ii)] '[Also in Group XXIX] A drinking trough 71 for animals is provided with a self-closing supply valve opened by the action of a nose plate 70 on a push rod 49 connected to the valve member. Various forms of self-closing valve are described (see Group XXIX) in all of which the valve member 2 has a mechanical connection with a diaphragm 40 so that the inlet pressure acting through a transverse passage 53 tends to maintain the valve on its seat. The mechanical connection may comprise transverse members 38, 39 bearing the push rod 37 and valve member 2 respectively and joined by the rods 65, 66, or it may comprise a single spindle passing with clearance through the passage 53 and an outlet nozzle 55 aligned therewith. The outlet passage 56 may be extended by a pipe 61. In Fig. 7, the diaphragm chamber and the outlet nozzle are screwed into opposite sides of the supply pipe 64. Where the latter is fed from a conduit 72 beneath the trough, the pipe 64 is closed by cap 68 to form an air chamber 73. Alternatively the pipe 64 may be fed from a conduit 69 above the trough.
