Abstract

643,976. Tenoning and dovetailing machines. DRAPAK, A., DRAPAK, O., and DRAPAK, J. Aug. 16, 1946, No. 24482. Convention date, Sept. 18, 1944. [Class 145(i)] In a tenoning and dovetailing machine in which both the longitudinal and transverse motions of the cutter 10 are produced by rotation of a crank arm 16 in order to attain the required depth of cut the cutter rest 8 has an additional transverse movement imparted to it by means of cam discs 26, 27 connected to the crank driving shaft 19 which discs on the rotation of the shaft 19 roll against fixed pressure rollers 28, 29 so as to be displaced together with the shaft, crank arm, and cutter, in the transverse direction towards and away from the work. As shown, the drive shaft 19, driven by belt through gearing 20, 21 rotates the crank 16 and pin 15 causing the rod 11 to reciprocate longitudinally in the arm 14 carried by a slide 3, and causing the slides 3 simultaneously to be reciprocated transversely to the work. The extent of the reciprocations and hence the pitch of the tenons &c. cut, is variable by means of a screw adjustment 17, Fig. 5 (not shown), in the arm 16. Upper and lower cam discs 26, 27 mounted on the driving shaft 19 are adapted to contact pressure rollers 28, 29 mounted on the fixed bracket 37 and adjustable thereon, and are mounted to swing about pins 40, 41 so that (according to the thickness of wood to be tenoned) they may be swung outwards or inwards according to a scale 39 by the rotation of the disc 42 with its pins 43, 44 engaging in the cam discs, Figs. 3, 4. As the cams rotate with the crank arm and driving shaft contact of cams 26 with roller 29 moves the shaft, crank gear (carried by slides 31 on rollers 32) slides 3, and cutter rest an additional amount towards the work; whilst later, contact of the cam 27 with roller 28 displaces the system the same additional amount away from the work. Longitudinal motion of the cutter rest in one direction only (say from right to left in Fig. 1) is ensured by the provision of a clutch mechanism 12 on the carrier 8. With the clutch out of action; the cutter assembly may be returned to its initial position by means of a hand wheel 7 and chain 5.
