[Class 78 (i)] A device for automatically shifting a conveyer in a plant for mining coal or the like includes a rigidly supported pawl mechanism operated by means of a wedge-shaped slide adapted to be drawn along the conveyer wherein a lever mechanism is mounted on the conveyer and is adapted to engage with the end of a rack which co-operates with a stationary locking device so that, as the wedgeshaped slide is drawn in either direction along the conveyer, it engages with the end of the rack and shifts the conveyer, and on moving further turns part of the lever mechanism through a small angle, whereby the rack is moved by an amount corresponding with the movement of the conveyer. The conveyer B which is made up of single sections receives material such as coal from a cutter D which has a laterally extending wedge 15 attached to a plate by a chain 14. Double arm levers 17, 18 are mounted on the conveyer, the adjoining ends of the levers engage recesses in the end of the rack 20 which has members passing on either side of the pit-prop 23 which is encompassed by a framework 24, 25, a member 24 engaging the teeth of a rack. The wedge when passing the rack is moved laterally, the arm 18 is moved to a position 18a and drags the rack after it, the arm. 17 moving to the position 17a. The next wedge, attached to the chain 14, also moves the conveyer laterally and drags the rack so that successive lateral movements may be obtained by a series of wedges. Only one double arm lever may be used for lateral movement in one direction of the conveyer. In an alternate form two hinged arms are mounted on a base-plate, such that when moying in one direction the conveyer is displaced and when moving in the opposite direction the arms collapse and no lateral movement takes place.
