Abstract
640,856. Rotary pumps and engines. PRENDERGAST, C. S., PRENDERGAST, R. S., DIXEY, G. W. B., and GORDON, H. Sept. 14, 1948, Nos. 24079/48 and 4390/49. [Class 110(ii)] A pump or engine of the outwardly-sliding abutment type has a series of working- chambers with phase-displaced rotors 4 in which the chambers and rotors are relatively profiled (a) to isolate at all times inlets from discharge ports, (b) to ensure that the flow from one chamber is always balanced by the flow from another and (c) to bring about reciprocal rates of acceleration and deceleration of the abutments as the rotors rotate to give uniform delivery (for a pump) at all times. Each rotor 4 is formed of two circular arcs connected by curves to give the correct abutment movement or the outer ring, carrying the abutments 10 may rotate about an inner stator. Spaces 11 behind pairs of abutments are interconnected and under pressure of delivery fluid with springs if desired. An inlet 13 leads to a pair of admission ports 14 and delivery ports 16 connect with a outlet 15. Fig. 8 shows a modification having four working chambers with peripheral outlet channels 16a connecting the working chambers with the delivery. Each working chamber may have one abutment only.
