[Class 98 (ii)] The invention relates to a method of preparing a travelling mask and a colour record of the foreground of a scene. Two films are exposed to identical images of the scene, the foreground only being significantly illuminated during the whole of the normal exposure period, the illumination of the background being increased to produce exposure while only one of the films is occulted during part of that period, one film being adapted to record some, but not all, of the colour aspects of the scene, the other film recording the remainder. As shown, two films are exposed with a beamsplitter j. One is a bipack with red and bluesensitive components Fr, Fb, the other is a single green-sensitive film Fg exposed behind a green filter fg. A normal shutter f cuts off light to both films while they are moved, and an auxiliary shutter f covers the film Fg during part of the period when the shutter e is open. The foreground F is illuminated continuously, or intermittently while the shutter f is open, by lamps which do not illuminate the backing D. The latter is illuminated intermittently by lamps d while. the shutter f is closed. In this way blue, red and green record negatives of the foreground Fbn, Frn, Fgn are produced, the first two with background areas dark, the third with these areas clear. A positive Fbm is produced and printed in superposition with the negative Fgn to produce a complementary mask Mc from which a silhouette mask Ms is printed. The flow diagram shows how these masks are used to produce masked positives Bbp, Bgp and Brp from colour separation negatives Bbw, Bgn and Brn of a separate and separately photographed background, and also masked positives Fbp, Fgp and Frp of the foreground. From these positives composite colour separation negatives B, G, R for use in imbibition printing are obtained. Specifications 553,197 and 649,520 are referred to.
