Abstract

647,929. Wind motors. HEPPELL, W. J. Sept. 13, 1948, No. 24034. [Class 110(iii)] A vaned rotor 12, Fig. 1, is mounted on a vertical axis 13 and air is directed on to the rotor by a wind scoop 10. An opposite wind scoop 11 directs air to a throat 21 and thereby lowers the air pressure in the adjacent part of the rotor. The motor is carried by a pivoted vertical frame which is moved into the wind by a rudder 30. The motor is regulated by hand or governor control of an exit flap valve 17 and a directing valve 19. The scoops have pivoted wall portions 22, loaded by weighted cables, which yield under excessive wind pressure. The scoops are pivoted at 42 and are held in place by weighted cables 45. Under very heavy wind pressure, the scoops move about their pivots and rest on the tail structure The rotor is shielded by a nose piece 25 and air contained by it is evacuated through a down-stream port at the top. This port is closed by a cover when the latter is moved by heavy wind pressure. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the scoop 11<SP>1</SP> has a guide vane 53 which directs the wind on to the rotor vanes. This vane is carried by the pivoted wall portion 58.
