[Class 122(v)] In a fluid seal for a rotary shaft 3 extending through a wall 1, a rotary sealing unit A is slidably mounted on the shaft in sealing contact with the shaft 3 and a stationary shaft-surrounding seat or sleeve 6 secured to the wall, and the shaft also has mounted thereon, between the sealing unit and a collar 12 fixed on the shaft in spaced relation to the sealing unit, a laterally removable retaining unit B which is resiliently expansible axially of the shaft into abutment with the sealing unit and the collar. The sealing unit A comprises a sealing ring 8 in rotating sealing contact with a face 7 of the sleeve 6, and a backing ring 10 which presses a packing ring 9 into the sealing ring 8 and against the the shaft 3. Annular beads 11, 14 on the backing ring 10 and collar 12 respectively position between them the unit B which retains the sealing unit A in position under axial pressure. The unit B comprises two U-shaped complementary plates 15, 16 astride the shaft and urged apart by springs 20 into abutment with the backing ring 10 and the collar 12 respectively and secured against lateral movement by plates 15, 16 formed with partial annular recesses 18, 17 of more than a semi-circle in length and engaging with the annular beads 11, 14. This engagement may be released and the retaining unit B removed laterally from the shaft by tightening thimble screws 23 loosely mounted in one plate 16 and screw-threaded into the other plate 15.
