Abstract

A method of mounting a vehicle body for passing through the treating stages of cleaning, protecting, prime coating and spray painting the body consists in threading a spindle through the body lengthwise thereof to <PICT:0644169/III/1> <PICT:0644169/III/2> <PICT:0644169/III/3> <PICT:0644169/III/4> intersect the dash, rigidly connecting the body to the spindle and connecting the spindle to the conveying means. Referring to the drawings, the construction shown in Fig. 1 of Specification 584,432 is modified by extending the axles 7 towards one another so that they form a spindle threading the vehicle body 14 and passing through the dash bulkhead thereof, the spindle being freely supported on two wheels 9 running on tracks 12. The spindle is displaced laterally by two conveyer chains running parallel to the tracks and fitted with driving dogs which straddle the ends of the spindle (see Specification 584,432). One end of the spindle carries a sprocket 10, engaging rack 13 so that the sprocket and hence the spindle rotates as the spindle is displaced laterally. After the body has been primecoated it is taken off the tracks, another spindle, carrying a locking device comprising a fixed notched plate 16 into which fits roller 18 carried by ratchet lever 17 and urged by spring 19 into engagement with plate 16, substituted and the body rested on trestle 15 provided with wheels 21 on cross bearers 22 which are engaged by dogs 23 fixed to towing chain 24 in guide 25. The spindle 7 may be provided with coupling flanges 26 bolted together while brackets 28 from this spindle are bolted to bumper strong points 29 to prevent rotation of the body relative to the spindle. The vehicle body may also be conveyed through a spray booth by being suspended from an overhead rail, Fig. 6, by wheels 36 carrying stirrups 35 from which depend the pair of chains 34 supporting the spindle, while towing chain 38 is also attached to the stirrups 35.
