632,286. Audible and like signalling apparatus. SUBMARINE SIGNAL CO. June 29, 1943, No. 10567. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1939. [Class 118 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIX] Apparatus for transmitting or receiving compressional waves by means of a circular radiating surface having linear dimensions large compared with the wave-length is designed so that the vibrational amplitude of the elemental parts of the surface is uniform along each line 5 parallel to a given diameter but decreases progressively across the surface from the diameter to the circumference in such a way as to produce a radiation pattern in polar co-ordinates substantially limited to a plane perpendicular to the parallel lines 5 and having in that plane a main central lobe and considerably reduced subsidiary lobes on each side. The Specification contains a mathematical formula connecting amplitude and distance from the main diameter and a graphical method for determining the desired amplitude distribution. In the construction shown, a large number of magneto-strictive oscillators 3 are fixed in parallel rows to the radiating surface and the number of ampere turns in the exciting coils is the same for each row but differs in different rows. Specifications 632,284 and 632,285 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the same effect may be produced by the use of a radiating or receiving surface vibrating with uniform amplitude but shaped so as to taper in a direction perpendicular to the central elemental row, e.g. a diamond or square. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
