Abstract

A machine for making candles comprises a chain of linked moulds which travels clockwise <PICT:0639323/III/1> <PICT:0639323/III/2> <PICT:0639323/III/3> <PICT:0639323/III/4> <PICT:0639323/III/5> around driving wheels L, passing first under a filling chamber R, then through a cooling chamber F and then to a discharge station. The moulds are connected by links A. Each mould comprises two halves H, J, which are pressed apart by a spring O but closed together at the lower side, prior to reaching the filling chamber R, by a tapering guide Q. As the moulds pass along the guide they are closed from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 5. Whilst they are in this guide the gap at the top of the moulds is closed by a guide rail X, which is cut away below the chamber R to allow molten candle grease to flow from the chamber into the moulds. The discharge station comprises a forked guide rail Y which spreads apart the lower parts of the moulds, whereupon the candles fall out of the moulds. A continuous wick T is passed centrally through the moulds and becomes embedded in the candle grease. The candles thus made are separated from one another by a rotating cam wheel Z which jerks downwardly each mould; the hole Z1 at the rear end of the mould through which the wick passes is knife-edged, so that this jerk severs the wick. A partition D isolates the spring O from the mould proper. Holes P in one mould half receive locating dowels in the other mould half. Rollers U are provided below the filling chamber to hold the two halves of the moulds closed. The Provisional Specification states that the moulds are carried on a chain or chains.
