Abstract

A saponaceous detergent composition comprises a mixture of a soap, a synthetic organic detergent of the sulphated or sulphonated type and an amide, the latter inhibiting lime soap precipitation and curd formation in hard water. The amides are preferably aliphatic amides of the general formula <FORM:0638637/III/1> , where R is hydrogen, alkyl, or alkylol and R1 and R11 are hydrogen, alkyl, alkylol or alkylene joined through an oxygen atom, and particularly comprise alkylolamides. Of a large number of amides specified, the following are representative: lauramide, dibutyl capramide, lauric ethanolamide, stearic acid amide of tris(hydroxymethyl) amino methane, N-lauroyl morpholine, lauric glycerylamide and palmitic acid amide of 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol. Corresponding amides derived from mixed acids, particularly from fatty oils and waxes, may be used, as well as amides of synthetic carboxylic acids of 10 to 20 carbon atoms. Any water-soluble soap may be used, including ammonium soaps or soaps of nitrogen bases such as triethanolamine. The synthetic detergents are described in large numbers and include the classes enumerated in Specifications 570,841, 572,304 and 573,662. Representative of the sulphate class are the following: the sodium salts of alkyl sulphates from lauryl and oleyl alcohols and from mixed alcohols obtained by reduction of coconut oil, babassu oil, &c., the sodium salt of the coconut oil fatty acid monoester of the sulphuric acid mono-ester of glycerol, the sodium salt of lauryl ether of ethylene glycol monosulphuric acid, and the sodium salt of sulphated coconut oil fatty acid ethanolamide. Representatives of the sulphonate class comprise: the oleic acid ester of the sodium salt of isethionic acid, the potassium salt of oleic acid amide of N-methyl taurine, the sodium salt of the lauryl alcohol ester of sulphoacetic acid, the higher alkylated benzene sulphonic acids, and the monolauryl ether of 1,2 - dihydroxy - propane - 3 - sodium - sulphate. Other usual adjuvants may be included in the compositions such as starch, urea, triethanolamine, phosphates and glycerine. The products may be made in flake, bar or paste form. Specifications 359,893, 379,534 and 406,565 also are referred to.
