Abstract

638,246. Torsional vibration - dampers. METALASTIK, Ltd., and HIRST, A. J. Feb. 17, 1948, No. 4545. [Class 108 (iii)] A torsional vibration absorber or damper for a rotating shaft, comprises an annular rim or inertia member and a number of angularly spaced substantially radial links connecting the inertia member to a hub or hubs on the shaft, the links being engaged with the inertia member and the hub or hubs through rubber or the like bushes of which the axes are parallel to the axis of the shaft. In the arrangement shown, an inertia ring a is provided with six inwardly projecting bosses b, each of which houses a rubber bush e bonded between an outer sleeve f and an inner sleeve d through through which a pin g connects together the outer ends of a pair of links h, h. The inner ends of the links h of each alternate pair are connected to a pin k passing through a bush l in a boss m projecting from a hub member n keyed to a shaft c. The inner ends of the other pairs of links are secured to pins p passing through bushes q in similar bosses r on a second hub member s. The member s is secured to a ring u which is splined on the shaft c and by which the hub member is angularly adjustable to vary the angle of inclination of the links to the radial position, to vary the stiffness of the damper. A recess for a tommy-bar may be provided in the inertia member to facilitate pre-loading of the links. The inertia ring a is maintained concentric with the shaft c independently of the links h by means of an apertured flanged disc w which is secured to the ring a and to a flanged ring x, the latter being mounted on the shaft c through a bonded rubber-bush y and a keyed sleeve z. A similar disc may be provided on the other side of the damper. Any convenient even number of pairs of links may be employed. In a modification the inner ends of all links are connected to pins on a common hub member, while the outer ends of alternate links are connected to two separate annular inertia members, angularly movable relative to each other and provided with means for securing them together in a desired angular position. The number of links may be odd or even.
