[Classes 103 (v) and 108 (iii)] In a shock-absorber of the type comprising a pair of spaced members 31, 32 on which a pair of slides 34, 35 may move towards one another against the action of an interposed compressionmember 36, and in which a load-transmitting member extends through and engages the slides so that displacement of the member in either direction compresses the spring by displacement of one or other of the slides, the load-transmitting member is in the form of a tube 40 arranged to move one slide 34 and to telescope with another tube 38 arranged to move the other slide 35, separation of the tubes being limited in the normal position of the slides, so that during towing both tubes move together in the same direction with displacement of the one slide and during pushing one tube moves relatively to the other with displacement of the second slide. The two members 31, 32 are held in spaced parallel relationship by transverse yokes 30, 33. The tube 40 passes through and is secured to the slide 34 and also embraces the end of the.tube 38 which passes through the slide 35. A slot 38<SP>1</SP> in the tube 38 and a pin 39 on the slide 35 allow relative movement in one direction only between the tube and slide. The tube 38, in moving to the left, carries with it the slide 35, so compressing the spring 36, and also telescopes into tube 40, being guided therein by collars 41, 43 secured to the latter tube, and by a collar 42 secured to itself. On movement of the tube 38 to the right it takes with it the tube 40 because the collars 41, 42 abut, and movement of the slide 34 compresses the spring 36 against the stationary slide 35. In another arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown), the spring is placed outside the telescoping tubes. A towing eye 45 may be secured either directly to the tube 38 or to an extension thereof by an overload release device 44 of the kind described in Specification 575,403. The release point of this device may be adjusted by means 47 of the kind described in Specification 576,957. The shockabsorber may be used in the towing arm of a trolley of the kind described in Specification 571,166.
