Abstract
629,207. Coating wires by extrusion. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Oct. 30, 1947, No. 28954. Convention date, Jan. 2. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] An electric cable core 6 is made by extruding an insulating sleeve 2 around and spaced from a conductor 1, and simultaneously extruding a helicoidal web 3 of insulating material integral with the leeve and extending between the sleeve and the conductor. The conductor 1 is drawn continuously through a rotating guide die 14 centred in the orifice 13 of an extrusion machine 7. The die 14 has an enlarged head 15, the walls of which co-operate with the nozzle 12 to form the annular orifice 13 through which the insulating sleeve 2 is extruded. The head 15 of the die is provided with an angularly disposed slot 16, Fig. 2, through which the web 3 is extruded. During the extrusion process the die 14 is rotated, causing the web 3 to be formed as a helicoid. To prevent distortion of the sleeve 2 air may be supplied to the interior of the cable core from a supply pipe 21. It passes through the hollow die 14 and through an opening 23 in the head thereof (Fig. 2). More than one helicoidal web may be formed by providing additional slots in the head 15 of the die 14. The insulating material used is preferably polyethylene or polystyrene.
