[Class 4] A retractable landing-gear for an aircraft comprises a wheel-carrying leg A1 pivoted at 1 to the aircraft to swing between the extended position shown in full lines and the retracted position shown in dotted lines, and a locking member, shown as a toggle 7, 8, pivoted at 2 to the aircraft and at a1 to the leg A1, the pivot point a1 moving in an arc about the point 1 during movement between the extended and retracted position, and the points 1, a1 and 2 forming symmetrical triangles in the two extreme positions. As shown, the toggle links 7, 8 are provided with shoulders 14, 15 preventing braking of the toggle in the wrong direction, and these shoulders are engaged in the extreme positions of the landing-gear by a recess 13 in a locking lever 11 mounted on the pivot a1. The actuating link from the jack (not shown) is pivoted at 16 to the lever 11 so that on initial operation of the jack the lever 11 is turned to disengage the shoulders 14, 15 and then to move a stop 12 against the toggle link 8 to break the toggle and move the linkage. A spring 17 lowers the landing-gear if the jack fails. The lever 11 may be omitted, the link V being connected directly to an extension of the link 8. The positions of the pivots 1 and 2 may be interchanged. In an alternative construction the toggle 7, 8 is replaced by a link pivoted at a1 to the leg A1 and having a slot engaging a pin secured at 2 to the aircraft. The slot may be bent at the end so that the action of the jack locks the landing gear in position.
