Abstract
628,301. Wrenches. PEHRSSON, J. June 4, 1947, No. 14776. Convention date, June 5, 1946. [Class 61(iii)] A n adjustable wrench comprises a head, a handle pivoted thereto, and a fixed jaw and a worm-actuated slidable jaw carried by said head, the worm being journalled upon a shaft slidable within the head and engaged by the handle so that the worm and shaft slide bodily to urge the slidable jaw into secure engagement with the work upon an operative stroke and to release this jaw during a return stroke so that the wrench may take up a new position on the work in readiness for a subsequent operative stroke. As described, the handle 2 is pivoted at 3 to the head 1 and carries a tooth 14 engaging a recess 13 in a member 12.. The member 12 is slidable in a guideway 11 and is shaped to form the shaft upon which the worm 10 rotates. The free end of the shaft is threaded to receive a nut 17 by means of which a spring 16 is compressed against the sleeve 15 which in turn presses against the worm to prevent accidental movement thereof. The handle is normally urged against a stop 5 by a spring 7 and is proportioned so that the leverage upon an operative stroke holds the jaws closed against the reaction of the nut. The spring 7 is secured between two pins 6, 18 of which 18 is threaded and may be removed to facilitate replacement of the spring The head is provided with an extension 20 to form a finger grip to assist in operation of the wrench, and the mechanism is enclosed by a cover plate 4, not shown.
