Abstract

The impure volatile chlorides resulting from the chlorination, in the presence of reducing carbon, of the oxide ores of silicon, titanium, zirconium, niobium and tin are freed from gaseous impurities such as chlorine, phosgene, hydrogen chloride and carbon monoxide by physical means, such as distillation under reflux or heating under reduced pressure, as a preliminary refining step. The chlorides are subsequently purified by known methods such as volatilizing and passing through an absorbent tower, the absorbent of which remains effective longer when the chlorides have been subjected to the pre-refining treatment.
