Abstract

627,268. Disintegrating ammunition. TECHNIQUES MODERNES SOC. ANON. Nov. 26, 1946, No. 35103. Convention date, July 11. [Class 9 (i)] In apparatus for recovering and unpriming the elements of small bore ammunition, ammunition is brought by a conveyor belt C and a shoot D to a wheel E with its rim inclined at about 30 degrees, a pusher member thrusting the individual rounds into housings F provided on the periphery of the wheel, so that, as the wheel is rotated, each projectile is brought into engagement with an extracting device G consisting of a carriage having a reciprocating motion and provided with two jaws adapted to grip the projectile and tear it out of the cartridge case. Furthermore, after extraction of the projectile the gunpowder falls out of the case into a receiver J and the case is then submitted to the action of a striker K and finally ejected. An iron plate having a V-shaped slot positions the individual rounds in the shoot D so that they arrive base downwards at the wheel. The rotation of the wheel and reciprocating motion of the extracting device are intermittent and arranged to take place alternately by inserting in the drive from a motor A a Maltese cross B, co-operating with a cam and a roller. The extractor carriage is provided with sleeves of diameters varying with the calibre of the ammunition. The extractor jaws are spring-pressed and move apart as they approach the projectile, which is then gripped between their striated surfaces and pulled out of its case on the return journey of the carriage. The extracted projectiles pass through a channel into a receiver, the leading projectiles being pushed forward by the following ones. As the wheel continues its motion, the gunpowder is poured into a collector J which conveys it to a receiver isolated beneath the machine. The cartridge case passes in front of a spring-actuated striker K controlled by a cam slope on the wheel. The striker fires the primer and ejecting means forces the case from the wheel into a receiver. If the jaws fail to extract the projectile, the latter contacts a safety switch M and stops the motor A. Mechanical or electrical means for driving the machine may replace the motor A. The conveyor belt may be replaced by an incline.
