Abstract

Mixtures comprising wool fibres and cellulose ester or ether fibres are treated with hydrochloric acid vapour in the presence of a swelling agent for the ester or ether, preferably between 50-100 DEG C. The swelling agent may be present in the material prior to its contact with the acid vapour, but preferably a volatile swelling agent is employed and its vapours brought into contact with the material in admixture with the hydrochloric acid vapour. Suitable swelling agents are acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, diacetone alcohol, dioxane, glycol monoalkyl ethers, and lower fatty acids such as formic, acetic and propionic. The action is continued until the fibre has been rendered so friable as to be removable by mechanical means, shaking, suction, sifting and the like. Finally the material is washed and dried. The treatment may be carried out in a perforated drum enclosed in a suitable casing, the vapour being introduced through a hollow axle. Rags, waste yarn and tailor's cuttings may be treated. The process may also be used to remove cellulose acetate from a woven or knitted fabric. The process is particularly applicable to cellulose acetate fibres in admixture with wool, but other derivatives such as cellulose acetate propionate, cellulose propionate, cellulose butyrate and ethyl and benzyl cellulose may be treated.
