Abstract
626,384. Optical systems. JEFFREE, J. H., and COMBINED OPTICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 3, 1947, No. 6060. [Class 97 (i)] An objective comprises a concave mirror having the form of a prolate ellipsoid of revolution and a transparent correcting body formed to be optically equivalent to the combination of a plate of zero paraxial power suited to correct the spherical aberration of the mirror with a positive lens of power sufficient to offset the astigmatic curvature of field introduced by the mirror, and substantially greater than is necessary to offset three quarters of the diverging effect of the plate at the margin of the useful aperture thereof. The transparent body may be so formed and so located relative to the centre of curvature of the paraxial region of the mirror as to render the system substantially free from coma. Numerical data are given for the system shown in which the transparent body 17 has a central aperture to accommodate a cathode ray tube 13 an image of which is projected on the screen 14 by mirror 12. The surface 18 is spherically convex and the surface 19 aspherical, the body 17 being located beyond the centre of curvature of the paraxial region of the mirror and so having a converging effect on all rays from the mirror. If desired the body 17 may consist of an achromatic combination and when it is located at the said centre or nearer the mirror the edges of the body are bent towards the mirror. Specification 570,694, [Group XXIII], is referred to.
